How To Draw A Big Fire

How to Depict Trees

Updated: 24 February 2022

Tree drawing guide with pens

In this guide, I will demonstrate how I simplify the cartoon process, and I hope that by the end of information technology you will be able to draw your favorite tree.

In order to draw realistic trees with pen and ink, information technology is important to pay attention to accuracy of the form (structure), and to learn how to create the illusion of brightness values and transitions with pens.

Bamboo

When looking at ANY tree, examine its basic shapes.

It is a good exercise to draw its simple shapes first:

Steps for drawing bamboo trees

Once y'all sympathise these simple shapes, you lot can use your artistic license and your cognition to recreate it.

There is no point cartoon every single leaf as you lot run into it (when using a reference image equally a guide).

Banana Tree

For trees with big leaves, similar a banana tree, starting time depict a study of the leaves from different angles.

Pen drawing of banana leaves

For a realistic outcome, make sure there is no symmetry, and that each leaf is unique.

Y'all can apply markers; they work well with pens.

Olive Tree Body

Wait at some reference images, or actual trees, before drawing the tree trunk.

First, draw outlines to create the form (structure).

Retrieve:

Draw sparse and gentle outlines, so they are not bold.

Adjacent, add some guidelines and basic details.

Adding some details to olive tree trunks

Last pace is texture cartoon.

Focus mainly on brightness values, while drawing marks with shape and direction like the reference image.

Keep in mind:

Each olive tree trunk has its own "personality", but all olive trees share common basic shapes.

How to Draw Leaves

Drawing leaves tin be challenging. Agreement their structure, and breaking the drawing procedure into steps, will produce a satisfying and realistic result.

Each tree leaf is in different management, has a unlike degree of foreshortening, and is overlapping other leaves.

Simply put, the grade and texture of leaves is abstract and messy.

To draw that, you need to be sketchy and loose with your marks, and to avoid any pattern!

How to draw leaves in an abstract way

Next pace is to pay attention to brightness values. That is how you create the illusion of volume. Significant, three-dimensional and not flat.

To create that illusion, scribble more lines for darker values, and fewer lines for brighter values:

How to add depth and volume to leaves when drawing

In improver, pay attention to leaves size, depending on the tree type, and how distant information technology is from the observer.

For big leaves, sketch big marks, and vice versa:

Different pen marks size for different leaves size

While the treetop is messy, at its edges you can add some indication of leaves type and size.

A drawing of an olive tree with pen and ink Olive tree

Later understanding the characteristics of a specific tree (olive tree in this case), it is quite easy to draw it from imagination.

If some terms similar foreshortening and overlapping are new to you, read my guide on how to draw with a sense of depth. It covers 15 methods to add depth to your drawing or painting.

Good to know:

Mostly, I use a pen with nib size 0.1. It is small enough to create fine details.

Photos & Contrast

When I am taking photos of a tree, I exercise information technology from several angles.

If possible, I circumvolve the tree to get a photo from every angle.

Reference photos for an olive tree

I select a photo that has high contrast as my reference image.

Contrast betwixt highlights and shadows is crucial for a drawing to stand up out, and to have presence.

Not enough dissimilarity leads to a flat drawing with no depth. Too much contrast looks cartoonish.

Pine Trees

Important:

Before diving into complex texturing and rendering, if you are a beginner, you might want to practice the next step.

Describe any random tree shape, sketch some random marks to fill information technology upwardly, and so draw more sketchy marks in one side and at the lesser of the tree (to create a darker value for the shadow area).

This should not take more than v minutes! The advanced texture y'all volition see after this example is but a matter of many hours of practice to refine the texture marks.

Sketching a quick tree for beginners

Pine copse are relatively piece of cake to draw from imagination.

They have very pocket-sized, needle-similar leaves.

I like to start past gently cartoon the form, and then fill it with small, random marks, that are Not in any specific direction or with reoccurring shape.

Last step is to depict more marks for darker areas, depending on the management of light yous choose.

How to draw pine trees from imagination with pen

Pine trees come up in many types and shapes.

Looking at a reference image can aid at the starting time, just every bit a guide to draw the form, and to pay attention to nighttime and light areas.

Other than that, attempt to be loose and sketchy with your marks.

When drawing a close-up view, you can indicate the needle-like leaves at the edges of the tree.

Snowy Pino Tree

A pen has simply one brightness value. Therefore, you take to use different techniques to create the illusion of transitions in brightness values.

One technique (or style) is to use hatching. Hatching means cartoon parallel lines.

By drawing lines with different degree of spacing between them (or with different line width), y'all can create an illusion of different effulgence values.

Different types of hatching

Another method is to use cross-hatching.

Cross-hatching means drawing sets of parallel lines in unlike management. Past adding more sets of cross-hatching, you tin create the illusion of darker values.

Different levels of cross-hatching

Y'all tin can use Whatever pen for drawing. I adopt artist-class technical pens (too fineliners). They create lines with fixed width, and their ink is made of pigments, which is very durable and lightfast.

Drawing with ballpoint pen and with a technical pen

For the snow part, y'all can leave it empty ("white"), or yous tin can employ hatching in some areas.

In this example, I used some hatching, and some marks with very calorie-free gray marking.

Christmas Tree

A Christmas tree is just another pine tree, only with decorations.

To add some baubles, first draw their shape, and then try different types of hatching, cross-hatching, and stippling.

Stippling is a cartoon technique that uses dots. The more dots you add in one area, the darker information technology looks.

Pen drawing of baubles for decoration

Y'all tin can add other decorations to your Christmas tree.

It is best to first sketch some test drawings on a different paper, to come across what works, before adding them to your cartoon.

To add together boxes in perspective, you should be familiar with linear perspective drawing, and learn to draw from imagination.

Tip:

If you find it hard to draw a tree with a pen, yous can always get-go with a pencil.

When you accomplish a satisfying result, you tin can get over information technology with a pen, and gently erase the pencil marks.

Drawing with White Pens

When cartoon with white pens, pay attention to the same drawing fundamentals.

While with black pens y'all depict more lines for darker areas, with white pens you should depict more lines for light/bright areas.

Tree drawing with white pen on black paper

These pens are most constructive on black (or dark) paper, and for highlights.

Keep in mind:

White pens are designed for roofing.

Cartoon with a black pen (which has ink) over white areas (fabricated by a white pen), may ruin the pen's nib, because it will be covered with the white substance (therefore its ink volition non flow smoothly).

Aspen & Birch Trees

Aspen & birch tree trunks are piece of cake to describe when doing information technology in steps.

Depict the grade first:

And then, add some basic details:

Drawing some details for trees

Finally, draw some effulgence values, and texture:

Yous can use (light) gray markers for coloring:

Overlapping

Overlapping means an object that partially covers another object.

When yous see an object that overlaps another object, you assume that this object is in forepart of the object it covers.

Overlapping is one of the most powerful ways to create the illusion of depth on a flat paper.

Two overlapping trees pen drawing Overlapping trees

Considering you cannot erase pen marks, it is all-time to draw foreground objects first!

If you lot want to depict a business firm in front end of a tree, draw the firm offset:

Pen drawing overlapping

Do the same for tree branches.

First, draw the branch that overlaps a tree, then the tree trunk.

Drawing overlapping branches first

For trees that have a complex construction, with many branches, yous tin can employ a pencil to draw the basic shapes.

When yous are happy with the issue, yous can describe over information technology with a pen, and gently erase the pencil marks.

A realistic drawing of birch trees with pen Birch trees

Transitions

Transitions are office of drawing (and painting) fundamentals. They exist everywhere!

For example, different areas of a flat plane take different relationships with any light source, reflections, and shadows.

Therefore, e'er wait for transitions (in brightness values) for your cartoon to look realistic and natural.

Different types of values transitions in leaves

Outset, look for light and dark areas.

And so, wait for transitions within each expanse. Transitions from dark to light, from light to lighter, and from dark to darker.

Oak tree, realistic pen drawing Oak tree

By drawing with NO transitions (and using hard edges), you can create something that looks unnatural, as opposed to something realistic with transitions.

Drawing of an unnatural leaves box vs natural leaves

The same way a gardener trims bushes and copse, yous can use your artistic license to create something that looks artificial or man-made:

Pen drawing of a bush which is trimmed

Creative license means to utilize your knowledge and feel.

Once you understand how to describe leaves, you can draw anything with leaves texture. Objects, figures, vehicles, or fifty-fifty a refrigerator:

Pen drawing of a refrigerator with leaves texture

Adept to know:

Transitions are not limited to brightness values. Transitions exist in colors, texture, edges, and temperature (transition from warm colors to cool colors).

If y'all are struggling with realistic drawing, you might want to read my realistic pencil-drawing guide. It covers the 4 important fundamentals (accurateness of the form, brightness values, edges, and transitions).

Weeping Willow

A weeping willow tree is a fleck tricky to draw.

Its leaves are easy to draw at an up-close await. As y'all get farther away, you can see long clusters of leaves with no single leafage shape.

How to draw weeping willow leaves

Y'all can kickoff by cartoon an outline for the tree structure. Do it gently.

Drawing the outline for the form of a weeping willow

Then, ane fashion is to draw the treetop (crown), section past section.

Alternatively, similar in this example, you tin can depict the night values first.

Drawing the dark values for weeping willow tree

Something to consider:

As mentioned above, a pen has i brightness value (unremarkably black, though other colors exist, more on that later).

Past drawing gently and swiftly, with a abrupt angle, you can produce lines that are less defined, and therefore with a lighter value.

Different types of lines with pens

The last footstep is to add together the lite values.

Pay attention to effulgence values, transitions, and texture. Exist abstruse with your marks, still with a sense of management.

How to Draw Huge Copse

For some large trees, similar Ficus, I like to employ a big paper sail (A3 in this example).

If the tree is also circuitous to draw, yous can depict a filigree (softly with a pencil), to carve up the paper into smaller sections (and apply the same grid for your reference image).

Big tree drawing with guidelines grid

Keep in mind:

Drawing on a large newspaper with a pen (or a pencil) is time-consuming. For a tree like this, it can easily accept more than 20 hours to complete.

Realistic ficus tree drawing with pen and ink Ficus tree

Sometimes, huge drawings may not wait so big on a small screen.

You lot can give it context by adding groundwork trees (from imagination in this case).

Pen drawing of a ficus tree and background Background drawing

Something to consider:

You should use the rules of atmospheric perspective when drawing backgrounds (landscape).

When objects are far abroad, there are more than atmosphere particles (that scatter lite) between them and the observer.

For far away objects, use less contrast and fewer details. In addition, groundwork layers become lighter, and have soft edges.

Calculation Groundwork

Copse are beautiful on their own. Sometimes though, you may want to add a groundwork.

Drawing grass is a elementary and easy solution for background.

Kickoff past drawing some short lines. The lines in the forepart should exist a bit bolder and longer.

Drawing some lines for background

Add more lines; some can be longer (mostly in the foreground).

Avoid any blueprint, and try to be abstruse with your marks.

Adding more lines for grass background

With a tree (eucalyptus in this case), grass (every bit groundwork) adds depth.

There is no actual depth in a drawing, your paper canvas is flat. The college y'all draw on your paper (until the horizon), the farther away it looks.

Past drawing cast shadow by the tree, you can add a sense of space to your drawing.

To draw bandage shadow, add more marks (lines) for that area, to create the illusion of dark value.

Tree with grass background pen drawing

Calculation Plants

Some other option is to add some plants. For example, cattail plant (Typha).

Step-by-step plant Typha drawing

Remember:

Natural plants and trees have an abstract shape. Make sure you do not depict them too round and uniform.

When cartoon long leaves, pay attention to cast shadows:

Drawing shadow on leaf

After exam-drawing the plant's parts, depict some loose outlines.

For realistic results, draw each flower or leaf with different size, shape, and management (simply, go along in listen the tree or plant characteristics).

Additionally, pay attention to overlapping.

Drawing outlines for cattail plants

So, add together some brightness values and cast shadows.

At present you can combine grass and plants to draw a landscape.

And, paint information technology with markers.

Size & Context

The style to define the size of objects is by placing them almost other familiar objects.

Although a worm is usually quite modest, past drawing it big compared to known objects like trees, it is possible to create a giant monstrous worm.

Giant monstrous worm pen drawing Behemothic worm

On the other mitt, you might want to draw a small tree, like a bonsai tree.

In this case, you need context.

Cartoon a tree in a establish pot tin can help, simply sometimes fifty-fifty big trees are sold within pots.

Drawing familiar surround, like a room, can assistance a lot in defining the bonsai's size.

Colored Pens

While the main color for technical pens is black, many brands offer other color options.

Pens with colors Colored technical pens

I prefer black ink, just occasionally I similar to mix it upward with colors.

Pen drawing of an Acacia tree Acacia tree

Log

To draw logs, timber, or tree trunks, start by drawing the outlines gently.

Pay attending to foreshortening, and add some basic details.

Lastly, make up one's mind where to place the calorie-free source, and draw a gradual transition in brightness values with sketchy marks.

Steps for sketching a log

Transitions:

A cylindrical object has a transition in effulgence values, from dark to light.

When using a black pen, depict more lines for darker areas.

Another selection is to draw less defined lines (swiftly at an angle), and add together more lines for darker values.

Transitions in brightness values using a black pen

Colored pens:

Unlike black pens, colored pens come in different levels of opacity.

When cartoon more in the same area, the pen creates a darkness value. Sometimes you tin let the pen ink dry, then describe over it once more.

Transitions in brightness values using colored pens

Edges:

Bandage shadows unremarkably have soft edges (meet below how the cast shadow from the rope has a soft edge).

When you lot scribble the forest texture, yous want to have some dents and holes in some areas.

Draw these dents with a difficult edge on their darker part, and a soft edge when the transition ends (the light side of the dent, or pigsty).

Edges drawing, using a pen

For a more realistic rendering, with more details, depict big.

Summary

While at that place are no lines in nature, pens can only create lines!

Drawing is creating an illusion. The world is three-dimensional, but your paper-canvas is 2-dimensional.

To create this illusion, pay attending to brightness values, edges, and transitions (among other things).

A pen has only one brightness value, so, different other drawing mediums (graphite, charcoal, pastel...), you take to create the illusion of different brightness values and transitions (in effulgence values).

When drawing trees, focus on accurateness of the form, and on effulgence values.

Brand sure you have plenty contrast between highlights and shadows, for the drawing to exist noticeable.

Subsequently yous master cartoon the form and effulgence values, details (texture) make all the deviation.

If yous liked this commodity, you lot might like my flower pen-drawing guide too.
